The following Board members attended:  Mrs. Neysa Gaskins, JD, President, Jennifer Troutman, VP, Ms. Beth Krause,Ph.D., Thomas Manning, and Dennis Bergansky.  Also attending were Steven A. Sayers, Interim Superintendent and Paul J. Pestello, Treasurer.

After roll call and the approval of the minutes, three principals were commended for achieving Gold, Silver, and Bronze PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) awards for 2021.

The bulk of the meeting was taken up by a number of presentations to the board.

  • First, the KHS Athletic Director highlighted the successes and challenges of the Athletic Department.

  • Then the Transportation Director highlighted the changes and challenges of the Transportation Department, comparing the numbers from the school year of 2014 with the numbers from the last school year. She detailed the efforts taken by the department to recruit more drivers.

  • Following this, the President of the PTO Council was introduced and she presented the goals for the Council and each school's PTO group.

Public Comment:  Teacher Sally Burton spoke to recognize and remind the board that this year is the 50th year of 7th grade camp.

At the conclusion of the presentations, the board ran through several motions to approve new Treasurer's Items as well as new and/or changed Certified, Classified, Supplemental and Special Education contracts, professional trips and one student field trip.

Of note under New Business was a motion to change the Kenston Citizens Advisory Committee (est. 2006) from a standing committee to an ad hoc committee "called together to meet specific needs of the Board and the community, as determined by the Board in collaboration with KCAC (Kenston Citizens Advisory Committee.)". The KCAC charter is included in the minutes.

Interim Superintendent Steve Sayers spoke about the change in the State Report Card from a graded system to a 25 star system. He reminded all that even though Kenston Schools has received 23/25 stars, leaders should not become complacent and instead continue to strive for improvement.

Sayers also mentioned that Kenston Schools will participate in a Sandy Hook Promise program known as "Start with Hello". This program is designed to teach students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other.

Superintendent Sayers also introduced "Kenston Conversations", an opportunity on three different occasions to join him in conversation about the Kenston Schools.

There was no Executive session.

The meeting adjourned at 8:09pm.
