LWV of Toledo-Lucas County to Host LWVUS President Deborah A. Turner M.D., J.D.

Toledo, OH ─ The League of Women Voters of Toledo-Lucas County (LWV-TLC) is holding two special events, “Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future” on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

The morning will kick off with the presentation of the first Cave Civic Award. The award will be given posthumously to honor Olive A. Colton, a founding member of the LWV-TLC and early suffragist. The event will take place at the historic Forest Cemetery, 1704 Mulberry St. in north Toledo from 10:30am – 12 noon.

Speakers, who will discuss the right to vote and the importance of civic engagement include:

·Wade Kapszukiewicz, Mayor of the City of Toledo

·Deborah A. Turner, MD., JD., President of the National League of Women Voters

The program concludes with a tour of Forest Cemetery led by local historian, Robyn Hage, and the Friends of Forest Cemetery. The tour will focus on Toledo suffragists Olive A. Colton, Sarah Ann Secor Bissell, Amy Grace Maher and Sarah R.L. Williams.

 

These women fought for women’s right to vote in Toledo and nationally. They were friends of national activists Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who were often present at local meetings. Three of the Toledo women lived long enough to see their work come to fruition with the passage of the 19th Amendment.

 

In the afternoon, Dr. Turner will speak with current and prospective League members from Ohio and southeast Michigan. The event will take place in the University of Toledo’s Recital Hall in the Center for Performing Arts,1910 W Rocket Dr, Toledo, OH 43606.

Access to parking is off Secor Road. Signs will be posted. Free parking slots are located between the yellow lines in the Law School Parking Lot.
