Chardon Board of Education Regular Meeting – January 26, 2026
Meeting Details: The Regular Meeting began at 5:30 pm at the Chardon Transportation and Business Affairs Center at 400 Washington Street in Chardon. 0:20 Min ROLL CALL AND WELCOME - Meeting was called to order. It was stated that this meeting is being held in accordance with Section 3313.15 of the Ohio Revised Code.
Attendance: Board President Karen Blankenship and members James Midyette, Gordon Landies, and Ashish Galhotra. Vice President Andrea Clark arrived just after roll call.
Staff Attendance: Superintendent Dr. Michael Hanlon and Treasurer Deb Armbruster

The Board Presiding Officer and student leader, 1st grade Munson Elementary student Jack Gallo, led the
meeting in the Pledge of Allegiance.

4:35 Min Pursuant to R.C. 3313.48, as outlined here, the 2027-2028 calendar is presented for public hearing with intent to recommend adoption at the Regular Board of Education meeting on March 16, 2026. An opportunity for public comment is included as a part of this agenda item with the same provisions governing public participation on agenda items. No public comment was made regarding the calendar at this meeting. The public comment period will be open for 30 days.
As of January 26, 2026, the instructional days and hours reflected in the proposed calendar are indicated below. Modifications to instructional hours may occur prior to the 2027-28 school year, but not less than the hours required by statute.

January is Board of Education Recognition Month

Congratulations to Transportation Director Josh Nau, who was selected by the Ohio Association of School Business Administrators as the 2026 Ohio Transportation Director of the Year.

The first meeting of a work group of Superintendents, Treasurers, Board members and community members is scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026 at 5:00 PM at the Geauga County Public Library Administration Building on Ravenwood Drive. The goal is to begin to unpack what schools will look like in the wake of possible property tax elimination with no clear-cut revenue replacement solution.

Chardon Schools Foundation (no slides) - Mr. Landies advised that the new grant applications will be available in February. He also expressed concern that grant requests/ applications received have been too low considering the availability of funds. He and the Chardon Foundation believe that this may be due to a communication issue, and Mr. Landies will be working with the Foundation to better disseminate information on the availability of funds which can be used for a wider variety of purposes than many applicants might suppose, such as capital projects, furniture and technology. He also will be working with the Foundation to raise funds.

Legislative Liaison (no slides) - Mrs. Clark - The Ohio General Assembly is not in session now but will return to session in mid-February. There were 10 Bills sent to Governor DeWine’s desk in December. Mrs. Clark very briefly noted four signed into law: HB 114, which mandates that school districts admit children to kindergarten only if the child is five years old by the first day of school; HBs 186 and 335, which cap inflation on property taxes; and HB 309, which expands the County Budget Commission’s authority to modify property tax collections.

46:13 Min Student, Staff and Liaison Report (with Slides beginning on page 8) - James Midyette gave thanks to Mason Cole, Chardon Local School District’s Communications Director, who fills Mr. Midyette’s monthly presentation with pictures and stories which can also be found on the District’s website, Facebook and Instagram pages.
